Searching for a Heart Rate Watch

In my previous post, started running again I’ve already told you I was looking for a new Heart Rate Watch.
The last few days I’ve been busy with searching info on different kinds of watches. The one I use now was a very cheap one that I bought to see if I’m really going to use it while I’m training, so I don’t had to spend a lot of money on a watch that i’ll use 2 or 3 times.
But about 2 years and a lot of kilometers later I can’t imagine myself running without one. Now I want one where you can also measure the distance and the speed you’re running at.
I’ve set myself a limit of maximum $400 for a watch.
Beneath this limit there are a few good alternatives. There’s the Polar RS200SD, the Suunto T3 or T4 (but without a food pod) and a few others. And my first choice was the RS200SD, but after reading an article in Runners World where they did a comparison between the ‘high-end’ watches, I was a little surprised that the Garmin Forerunner 305 came out as the best of them all.
But I was even more surprised of the price you’ll have to pay for them on E-Bay.

Even in all the reviews I’ve read about the 305, almoust every review likes it. The only downside of the watch is the size, it looks a little big around a wrist. But this is more a downsize for the ‘smaller’ people and after all, you’ll only wear it while you’re running.
What can it do:

  • hearth rate monitor
  • measure distance and speed via GPS
  • auto lap
  • auto pause (stops counting when you stop running and automatically resumes when you start again)
  • train against or with a virtual partner
  • create custom workouts
  • set up interval trainings
  • pace alert (see if you’re running faster or slower then your presetted running pace)
  • customizable screens
  • barometric altimeter
  • possibility to use a cadense meter if you’re riding a bike

  • The best advantage point it made in the Runners World test is that it measured the distance they tested on exactly although the Polar and Suunto where very close also.
But you can’t find the Polar RS800 and the Suunto T6 beneath $400, the forerunner on the other hand is no problem to find.
I’ll do a little more research on some watches in the next few days and hopefully I’ll buy myself a new watch very soon.
Every feedback about hearth rate watches you’re using are welcome here also.
