Jamaican’s Asafa Powell runs New 100m World Record

Today Asafa Powell smashed the World Record on the 100m in Rieti, Italy.
He ran 0.03 of a second faster than his old World Record that he shared with Justin Gatlin until now that is.
He finished in 9.74 seconds.
This surely is a positive development for Asafa himself after he ‘only’ finished 3rd in the World Championships at Osaka, where Tyson Gay won the gold medal.

I’m looking forward to see them run each other again at the Ivo Van Damme Memorial here in Brussels that will go through next friday the 14th September. Hopefully they can push each other to run an even better time that day.

Wow, that is an amazing accomplishment.  I still remember way back when a couple of Canadians broke the World Record for the 100m during their time.  First it was Ben Johnson, but he was later found out to be using steroids Then it was Donovan Bailey, who broke the record at the Olympics, but never did well again afterwards.  I’m wondering if breaking the 9.5 second barrier will be possible...I guess only time will tell.
